One of the numerous activities of the Pelagos Sanctuary is to bring together and support the different research teams investigating Mediterranean marine mammals. The scientific monitoring of cetacean populations, along with technological research, is fundamental to our knowledge and helps guide the decisions of the Sanctuary’s managers.
In France, Mediterranean Marine Mammals Scientific Interest Group (GIS3M) was created in August 2007. Registered as a non -profit organization in France, it seeks to support research and heighten the expertise on Mediterranean marine mammals. Its multi-disciplinary approach promotes a synergy of skills by bringing together researchers and scientists from different backgrounds as well as by providing material and financial resources to support joint research projects.
