The Principality of Monaco implements the "high quality whale watching" label on its territory.

On February 9th, the executive Secretaries of ACCOBAMS and Pelagos Agreement signed a convention with the AMPN (Association Monégasque pour la Protection de la Nature) to implement the label in Principality of Monaco. The label " high quality whale watching " is intended for the operators offering whale-watching trips and wishing to register their activity in a sustainable and quality approach, respectful of the code of conduct promulgated by both Agreements.

“High Quality Whale Watching” label for trips to observe marine mammals at sea

The Executive Secretaries of ACCOBAMS and the Pelagos Sanctuary signed the first Convention on implementing the “High Quality Whale Watching” label, aimed at French tour operators, in Monaco on 18 July 2014.

Following the signing of the Pelagos Charter, the town of Bordighera banned the traditional night of floating lanterns scheduled for the 19th July, 2014 to preserve the marine environment and cetaceans in particular. It was planned to use about a thousand plastic candles. To learn more, click pdf here  (Italian version).

In the framework of the research program funded by the French Ministry of Ecology, the "Parc national de Port-Cros" (responsible for the animation of the French Part of the Pelagos Sanctuary) published a call for proposals. It can be pdf downloaded here .

There are not only cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary: rare case of observation of two groups of Mobula mobular along the coast of San Remo and Ventimiglia.

On 15th and 16th July 2014, during the research and monitoring conducted by CSR - Cetacean Sanctuary Research-Institute of Tethys, two groups of Mobula mobular were identified (with respectively 10 and 15 individuals), more known in the Mediterranean Sea as the "devil of the seas."

The Permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos Sanctuary will organize on 29-30 October 2014, in collaboration with the ACCOBAMS Permanent Secretariat, a workshop on cetacean live stranding. Its objective is to define an administrative transboundary procedure in order to facilitate response to emergency situation where transboundary situation occurs in the Pelagos Sanctuary (pilot area of ACCOBAMS).

The administrative transboundary procedure agreed during the workshop will be presented to all Pelagos Sanctuary and ACCOBAMS Parties as a framework document for other areas where transboundary situation occurs.
