The Municipality of Pisa, as part of its initiatives conducted in fulfilment of the first two-year period of signing the Partnership Charter of the Pelagos Sanctuary, which took place on 22 September 2017, has promoted 2 events:

- The Pelagos Dolphin and the Evil Plastic", held on May 13 at the Calambrone playroom and aimed at children between 3 and 8 years and the general public;

- Pelagos: a sea of dolphins", which will be held on Friday, August 2 at 19:00 at the Bagno degli Americani in Tirrenia (PI), facing the general public.


Both initiatives are conducted with the support of the CETUS Centre in Viareggio, which is part of the regional network of the Tuscan Observatory for Biodiversity.

The project "Plastic Busters MPAs", promoted by the Department of Physical, Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Siena in collaboration with a consortium of international partners, aims to analyze the consequences of micro and macro-plastics on marine biodiversity and endangered species, such as some species of cetaceans, turtles and seabirds. The results of the carried out monitoring activities will provide an exhaustive analysis of the impact of marine litter in the Marine Protected Areas involved in the project.
In July 2019 will begin the monitoring activities of plastics in the area of the Pelagos!

May 18th, 2019, the municipality of Varazze and the Istituto Comprensivo Nelson Mandela Varazze-Celle, collaborating with "Menkab: il Respiro del Mare », are organizing the project « DIVERSITÀ D’A-MARE », contributing to the educational inclusion and the protection of the Pelagos Sanctuary. 



In line with the commitments asserted in the Pelagos Partnership Charter, the municipality of Vado Ligure - which has expressed a particular dedication to awareness campaigns towards the protection of marine mammals hereby favouring educational actions to educate people on environmental issues in the Pelagos Sanctuary - has created the Environmental Education Project “IO VADO…CON LE BALENE”, “Going with whales”.


On June 1st, 2019, the “GIORNATA MONDIALE DEL GIOCO”, the project will be introduced to the public and young people or stakeholders who display passions for interesting activities for the project in particular. The goal is to provide maximum visibility to the protection of marine spaces among the youth.

The event will start at 3 p.m on Piazza Cavour in Vado Ligure, the afternoon will be dedicated to eco-friendly games, experiences to build initiaves… with the ever-lasting goal to implement the values of the Pelagos Agreement globally.


Workshops for children include:

Design your own wishcard lighting up for real, inspired by the environment of the sea and bring it home!


  • Science on point

Enter a marine laborary where experiences with water, observations with microscopes to recognize all the extraordinary species that inhabit the sea.  Come and join us for free!


Exhibition of the structures created by primary school kids of Vado Ligure for the contest “Io Vado…con le balene”


Whales, dolphins and other cetaceans were created by the kids with recycled materials and will be exhibited on the piazza during the whole afternoon to raise awareness on the need to stop plastic litter !


At 5:30 p.m, we will announce the winners of the contest!


The event is organized in cooperation with the animations of the Giornata Mondiale del Gioco, with the Centro Educazione Ambientale Riviera del Beigua and the Servizio Ambiente of Vado Ligure, with the objective to promote the initiatives of the Partnership Charter of the Pelagos Agreement and the specific initiatives of Vado Ligure.It will also be held in cooperation with SAT S.p.A.

            April, 30th 2019, the municipality of San Giuliano Terme (PI) has signed the Partnership Charter of the Pelagos Agreement, hereby joining the other 106 Italian municipilaties as well as the 111 total signatories, for the protection of marine mammals in the Sanctuary.

           Mayor Sergio di Maio, and Amiral Aurelio Caligiore, captain of RAM CC.PP. have signed the Charter. Coastguards have represented the Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection. The fact that the municipality and a delegation of students from the Institute of Gereschi di Pantasserchio participated to the event sheds light on their commitment to protect the Sanctuary.

           During the meeting, the topical subject of plastic litter in the Mediterranean Sea was tackled : in collaboration with Doctress Elisa Turiani of Legambiante Toscana, we have introduced the Pelagos Plastic Free Project which the municipality chose to support.

            This event marks the entire adhesion of all the coastal Pise municipalities as well as the territories surrounding the Regional Park of San Rossore Migliarino Massaciuccoli.



On March, 19th, 2019. Roquebrune-sur-Argens officially signed the Partnership Charter for the Pelagos Sanctuary, confirming its intention to commit to the protection of the marine mammals of the Pelagos Sanctuary.

On September 25th, 2018 in Barrettali, ten municipalities if the Natural Marine Park of Cap Corse and l'Agriate / Parc naturale marine du u Capicorsu è di l'Agriate, have signed the Charter of the Pelagos Agreement! The municipalities including Centuri, Olmeta di Capicorsu, Patrimoniu, Pinu, Ruglianu, San Fiurenzu, San Gavinu di Tenda, San Martinu di Lota, Santu Petru di Tenda and Siscu have therefore further expressed their pledge to protect the marine mammals of the Pelagos Sanctuary as well as their habitat.

The Pelagos Agreement recruits an Executive Secretary!

The deadline for all submissions is by 11:59 pm (UCT/GMT + 2 hours) Sunday October 14th 2018.

Submissions will be presented by e-mail at the Permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos Agreement.

The Permanent Secretariats of the Pelagos Agreement and the ACCOBAMS and CIMA Research Foundation are organizing a photographic exhibition, at the Galerie des pêcheurs in Monaco, on cetaceans and the threats they face. The exhibition, visible until May 7th, 2018, will be inaugurated during the 2nd edition of Monaco Ocean Week, on the occasion of a Memorandum of Understanding signature between the Secretariats of the ACCOBAMS and the Pelagos Agreement.


The municipality of Ceriale (Province of Savona) has recently decided to adhere to the Pelagos Partnership Charter.

At present, the accessions of the Italian Party have reached 97 accessions out of 111 coastal municipalities of the Italian coastline. With regard to the Ligurian region, 58 municipalities have joined out of 63 eligible, equal to 92 % at regional level.
